Kathleen Van Royen

Kathleen Van Royen (MSc) is a PhD student at the Department of Communication Studies, University of Antwerp. She holds a Master Degree in Strategic communication and in Health education and promotion. Since 2013, she is a member of the research group MIOS (Media & ICT in Organizations & Society).
Kathleen is involved in the AMiCA project which aims at developing an automatic monitoring system to detect critical situations for adolescents on social network sites by means of image and text analysis. In particular, the focus lies on three situations: cyberbullying, sexual transgressive behavior, and depression and suicidal behavior. More information can be found on http://www.amicaproject.be/
Kathleen’s research interest lies in health communication and promotion, with a particular focus on adolescents. She has worked before within research projects to promote a healthy diet and physical activity among adolescents.
Currently, she conducts research in regard with adolescents, social media and online sexual harassment, under supervision of Prof. Dr. Karolien Poels and Prof. Dr. Heidi Vandebosch (University of Antwerp). In particular, within the scope of her PhD, she studies the appraisal and coping of adolescents with transgressive sexual behavior on social media.
